Questions/Discussion

1. To open the editor, put your cursor at the end of a line text, last word, and double-click your mouse. Then you can move the cursor to start a new line or go to comment to make your comment. You should spend some time looking at "Help on Editing" and "Hints"

  • If you arrive at this page without logging in, there will not be an Edit link on the left sidebar. If you wish to edit this page without logging in, follow the advice above and double-click. There are only two pages on this wiki that you may edit without logging in -- the other page is the WikiSandBox.

2. If the rockart you are categorizing is a glyph on the Datum Boulder, the form does not allow 0.0 for the Distance from the datum. If you change the Image Category to Datum it does not allow the entry of a cluster no. Yet in this case the boulder/cluster is a numbered boulder with multiple panels. How do I enter the data?

3. If you are not ready to enter the data for the next cluster in the queue, how can you advance to another cluster to enter. Clicking on the images shown at the bottom only brings up a larger image of that photo, without allowing data entry.

  • There is not currently an option to skip an image in the categorization process. Alternatives are to enter cluster and panel and leave everything else blank, or assign the image to an odd category like Other. When the data is available later, use Check Survey Data to requeue the images, and then proceed with Categorize Images.

4. I entered all the Category data. Now I find that I mislabeled a panel on one cluster. Under "check survey" I selected the boulder and then the panel with the error, then "edit this panel", but I don't see a way to change the panel letter. Do I have to "requeue" all the data on that image to change it?

  • Cluster numbers, panel letters and element numbers may be changed with the Renumber Panels or Elements function.

5. When identifying rock art elements, I check one of the classes, put in the next element number, add a comment, and when I try to submit I get the following "An element definition on the image is incomplete! Each element requires at least 2 clicks [ and ]." What 2 clicks?

  • While close-up images of individual elements may be used, most images are expected to be of panels that may have multiple elements. The element number field is incremented automatically starting with 1 on each panel, so there is rarely a need to change the element number. The comment field will apply to the image (a comment may be applied to the element on the Define Rock Art Element Attributes function).

The normal sequence for identifying a rock art element is to click on an element class radio button, then 2 to 5 clicks are made on the image. The first two required clicks are made on opposite corners of a box that will enclose the element (the element is "cropped" from the image). Usually a pecked area of the element is clicked to position the element number (default will be the center of the box). If a patina analysis is desired, then a fourth click is made to indicate an area of natural patina. If the element has been repecked or enhanced, a fifth click may be made to indicate a portion of the repecked area.

While the DigitalRockArt patina analysis is three times better than using Munsell, it is rarely useful. As hope always trumps experience, I usually do the 4th click on natural patina and the 5th click if the element appears to have been enhanced.
